Occasionally I am asked "why doesn't Gaulhofer produce single or double hung operable windows and instead only produces tilt and turn operable windows". Since hung type windows are the conventional mainstay here in America, it certainly is a fair question and would be easier from a marketing perspective, to simply conform to what is most popular ? Perhaps, but the simple answer, is that Gaulhofer believes hung windows, are antiquated on a number of critical fronts, in comparison to our compression-sealed tilt and turn windows and would rather educate trade professionals and the buying public, than conform to outdated norms.

So what makes our compression sealed tilt and turn windows so much better than typical single or double hung windows?

Adjustability - There is virtually no possible way to adjust the operable sash on single or double hung windows. Therefore, all functionality and the ease of operation of a hung window is entirely predicated on the window remaining perfectly plumb and square, long after the day of installation and for the life of that window. Conversely, the operable sash on our tilt and turn windows, can quickly and easily be adjusted in minutes, with a singular tool, and in 3D fashion, ie up/down, left/right, and in/out. So, despite the occurrence of structural settling, the window can always be adjusted to perform optimally. With zero adjustability, hung windows are simply not able to accommodate any amount of natural settling and will only operate properly and without effort, when they are precisely plumb and square.

Sliding seal versus Compression seal - Hung windows utilize a variety of sliding seals between the jambs and frame and the meeting stile of the sash and frame. After years of operational use, the friction from simple EPDM (rubber) gaskets, sliding against opposing surfaces naturally results in degradation, and ultimately leads to loss of thermal efficiency as well as air and water leakage. So, over the continuum, hung windows have proven to be far less efficient thermally, and with respect to air and water infiltration, than their tilt and turn compression-sealed counter parts. There is zero friction with compression seals, so such wear and tear does not occur. Additionally, Gaulhofer utilizes (3) seamless (not cut in the corners) compression fitted seals that run the perimeter of the window; two on the sash and one on the frame, and are warrantied for the life of the window.

Ease of operation - Let's face it, hung windows are clunky to operate and to clean. Whereas tilt and turn windows are easy to operate, and because they swing in, the outside of the window can easily be cleaned by simply opening the window. And if you wish to get fresh air but without completely opening the window, you just turn the handle and tilt the window from the top. There's even a fourth position, where the window is only slightly tilted at the top (roughly 5 degrees) allowing for trickle ventilation, even during inclement weather. There's simply no comparison.

Resistance to forced entry - Hung windows are notoriously easy to break into. As a matter of fact, our technical manager spent years working in certification labs, testing all types of windows and doors, boasts that he is able to break into most hung windows on the market in under a minute. This just isn't possible with our tilt and turn windows. Without literally breaking the glass, they are nearly impenetrable and have the highest forced resistance rating on the market. This is because we utilize multi-point lockable gearing hidden between the sash and frame, rather than flimsy knobs and levers, that are visible and accessible on typical hung windows. Our multi-point gearing incorporates a series of mushroom pins which move in unison and slide into their keepers when the handle is actuated into the closed and locked position, making forced entry a virtual impossibility.

Of course, there are times when the desired aesthetic dictates a traditional hung look. And thankfully Gaulhofer is able to produce very close and widely accepted approximations of this look while still able to deliver all of the superior elements inherent to Gaulhofer's tilt and turn windows. Here are just two examples, the second of which is a New York brownstone, located in a historically sensitive area and where design covenants and strictly enforced codes dictated a hung look and the homeowner insisted on Gaulhofer quality and engineering.
